Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer has 4 amiibo features, which work with 438 amiibo.
Jump to feature ▾Call the villager on the amiibo phone to design their home on demand
In short: any non-SP card from Series 1, 2, 3, 4, and Promos. (Not compatible with Welcome or Sanrio cards.)
Villagers also come to Nook's Homes as clients without amiibo; the card lets you choose who and when.

Call a special character on the amiibo phone to design their home, unlocking their picture in the catalog
Special characters only become clients through their amiibo, so this is the only way to design their homes and add their pictures (and Isabelle's scooter) to the catalog.
Save a home's furniture to the amiibo, to unlock that furniture in another player's game
After inviting the character to a home, scan the amiibo again to save all the room's furniture to it; another player scans it to add that furniture to their catalog. After storing a house design, scanning the amiibo in Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival (Wii U) to place the villager's house on the game board will use the stored house design's exterior.
